HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS (HIS) DEVELOPER INTERN

Health Strat (HS) is an indigenous public health organization established in 2011 with current presence in all 47 counties in Kenya: working with governments, health care organizations, and development health organizations to optimize their investments for more effective health care delivery. We work side-by-side with our clients and partners to apply and utilize cutting edge technology, data, and best practices to solve intractable challenges in health care delivery, public health practice and market access. Our customized solutions, tools and frameworks are easy to integrate into organizational systems and business processes, requiring minimal additional resource investments. We co-design interventions with our clients and partners ensuring ownership throughout the implementation process – a strategy that promotes sustainability. Health Strat currently has 85 staff members with clearly defined roles and oversight from a diverse Board of Directors. The staff numbers vary depending on the number and nature of projects.

About the Project

Monitoring and Evaluation & Strategic Information Systems (MESIS) is a project led by Health Strat in partnership with the National and AIDS STI Control Program (NASCOP) and University of Nairobi through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Project supports enhancing strategic information capacity for HIV/AIDS programs towards sustaining epidemic control in Kenya through monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and data science. The Project implements several technological innovations in health information system

Position Summary

Reporting to the Lead Software Developer, the Health Information Systems Intern will be part of the project software development team that supports development and enhancement of several technological innovations.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Collect and document system requirements for the development of information systems.
  • Write reusable, testable, and efficient code, including writing tests and test cases.
  • Deploy, maintain, and administer information systems including but not limited to assigning rights to users, maintaining backups, and providing support to users.
  • Develop training materials and training of users, including conducting pre and post training assessments to gauge the effectiveness of the training.
  • Design databases, including relational and no-SQL databases
  • Work with various data sources, including web services, APIs, Microsoft Excel, and CSV, etc.
  • Any other duties assigned related to this job description.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or software engineering with a focus on software development or an equivalent degree.
  • Knowledge of software development languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python, PHP, C#.
  • Knowledge of databases such as MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MSSQL, including writing SQL queries.
  • Unix/Linux and/or Windows server and desktop background.
  • Knowledge and experience in writing Unix/Linux scripts will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of working with Restful API will be an added advantage.
